For those of you veterans, note that things are a little different this year: for donors, the preview sale is tomorrow, FRIDAY May 1, 2015, from 3pm-4pm. At 4pm Friday, the regular sale starts and goes to dark. The sale will continue on Saturday from 9am-1pm.
Don’t miss out on the chance to purchase plants in the preview — pot up some plants and bring them with you! The preview is just for donors and you can purchase up to the number of plants you donate.

Hello Plant Sale Fans:
I’m later than I’d posting this but hopefully it is perfect timing for you to start digging as you do your yard cleanup! I’m planning to have a two-day sale this year.
Here’s the detailed information about The Sale, which will be slightly different than last year: This is a sale I hold in my backyard each year. The plants are donated by interested people like you and come from our own gardens. Proceeds from the sale benefit The Nature Conservancy in Virginia. I will begin collecting plants the weekend before the sale and up to the sale. One of my friends, who often donates over 200 plants, moved from her large property and does not have plants to donate this year! So I’m hoping others will make up the difference! (hint, hint)
The dates this year will be:
Friday, May 1st from 4:00 pm – dark and
Saturday, May 2nd from 9am – 1pm
The location is my backyard at 203 Howard Street in Ashland.
Since this will be a two day sale instead of the usual three day sale, I will be holding the preview for donors only from 3:00-4:00 on Friday. (I found that a three day sale was very exhausting for me!) At this time, donors may purchase up to the number of plants donated by that person. So the more plants you donate, the more purchasing power you have. I hope you will note this is not a swap but a sale to raise money for a good cause. J Hang around until 4:00 and the sale is open to everyone for unlimited purchases!
Saturday at 1:00, the sale will be closed and (I’m hoping) there will be a relevant educational talk given in front of my house. Saturday at 1:20, all leftover plants are given to any plant donor in any quantity. This part of the event has become very popular to the donors and there are always lots of great plants available.
If you have plants to donate, you can leave them on my front porch any time during the week or so before the sale (please leave your name so I know who donated what). If you can label them with their names, that’s great. No invasive alien plants will be sold (see attached invasive species list: http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural_heritage/documents/invlist.pdf – it may surprise you!) and we love to see Virginia native plants at the sale.

Are you feeling water logged? Is your house lake front property? Yikes, that was a lot of rain and maybe more today!
I am still planning to have a 1 day sale on Saturday, May 3 and have extended the hours from 9am-3pm.
I will be accepting donations starting TOMORROW, Friday May 2nd and Saturday, preferably early in the sale and I have Daffodil and Grape Hyacinth bulbs from Lewis Ginter.
As always, if you are a donor, you may take home free plants after the sale is over at 3pm.

I’m really looking forward to the mini Annual Backyard Plant Sale this coming weekend.
Saturday May 3, from 9am – 3pm (I extended the hours for more fun) will be the only day of the plant sale. It will be a lot looser than previous years as I am avoiding as much work as possible and focusing on fun. Come see our new chickens and play some corn hole too!
If you would like to donate plants, we will welcome them starting Friday May 2nd or Saturday morning (anytime Sat really but the later they come, the harder to sell)! If you are a donor, you can come anytime after the sale and take home free plants.
I have several varieties of daffodil bulbs available from Lewis Ginter such as Attraction, Tete-a-tete, Jet Fire, Dutch Master, Accent. Also some grape hyacinths from Lewis Ginter.
Dear Plant Sale Friends:
I have been agonizing over the plant sale this year, trying to decide whether to have it or not, hence my delayed notification. Due to an illness in my family requiring my full time care, I have decided to offer a very scaled down version of the sale which will require little advanced prep on my part.
Lewis Ginter has offered me bulbs and I hate to have them go to waste, so I am planning to pick them up and offer them to you for donations to The Nature Conservancy on May 3, 2014 between 9am and 1pm. And perhaps some of you who are passionate about the sale have some ideas of ways we could offer things or would like to bring some plants to offer that morning — so who knows what will show up!
I’m doing this because I think it will be fun and life-giving on that day, and I will enjoy looking forward to something fun!

The weather was like England, which made it so much easier to care for a lot of newly dug potted plants lying in the grass. I’ve actually never been to England but that is my guess of what it is like there!
It was so fun to see all of you who came; the plant sale is starting to feel like a reunion to me. And I am so appreciative of the loving care you donors put into providing plants for the sale and the fantastic variety that we get every year. Happy gardening! Things are happening in the gardening and I’m itching to get out there and start working! But first, I’ll give you some information about this year’s sale.
The Annual Backyard Plant Sale is a sale I hold in my backyard each year. The plants are donated by interested people like you and come from our own gardens. Additionally Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden donates daffodil bulbs from their conservatory. Proceeds from the sale benefit The Nature Conservancy’s Chesapeake Rivers Program specifically for land acquisitions in our area.
The dates this year will be:
Friday, May 3rd from 4:00 pm – dark
Saturday, May 4th from 9am – 1pm
The location is my backyard at 203 Howard Street in Ashland.
For those who donate plants, there are the excellent perks! There will be a preview sale for donors on Thursday, May 2nd from 4pm-dark. On this day, only donors may purchase up to the number of plants donated by that person. Some items actually sell out on this day. So the more plants you donate, the more purchasing power you have. I hope you will note this is not a swap but a sale to raise money for a good cause. Yes, even the preview is a sale.
