Spring is here! And with it, the annual announcement of the Annual Backyard Plant Sale.

I’m Deborah Barber, Julie’s friend from Arlington.  I come down each year to help with the plant sale because I LOVE to spend a spring day in a beautiful place talking with people about plants! This sale is held in Julie’s back yard, and the plants are donated by people like you and me, mostly from our own gardens. Proceeds from the sale benefit The Nature Conservancy in Virginia.

The dates this year will be:

Friday, May 4th from 4:00 pm – dark     …and…    

Saturday, May 5th from 9am – 1pm

The location is Julie’s backyard at 203 Howard Street in Ashland.

Friday from 3:00-4:00 pm is the preview for donors. At this time, donors may purchase up to the number of plants that they have donated. So the more plants you donate, the more purchasing power you have. Please note this is not a swap but a sale to raise money for a good cause.  At  4:00 pm the sale is open to everyone for unlimited purchases.

Saturday at 1:00, the sale will be closed and there will be an educational talk given in front of the house. Saturday at 1:20, all leftover plants are given to any plant donor in any quantity. This part of the event is popular with the donors and there are always lots of great plants available.

If you have plants to donate, you can leave them on the front porch any time during the week before the sale (please leave your name so we know who donated what). If you can label them with their plant names or leave a list, that’s great. No invasive alien plants will be sold (see the Virginia invasive species list – it may surprise you!)  Also, we LOVE to see Virginia native plants at the sale.

Hello Folks!

I don’t know about you but I’m getting excited for the Annual Backyard Plant Sale which is happening the last two days of April (April 29 4pm to dark and April 30 9am-1pm). This weekend I hope to be a busy bee in preparation. If you have any plants, that would be a great time to drop them off — just leave them on my front porch.

By the way, I got two truckloads of tulips from Lewis Ginter which I will be giving away! If they come up next year you are welcome to make a donation then.

Hello Plant Sale Fans:

I’m later than I’d posting this but hopefully it is perfect timing for you to start digging as you do your yard cleanup! I’m planning to have a two-day sale this year.

Here’s the detailed information about The Sale, which will be slightly different than last year: This is a sale I hold in my backyard each year. The plants are donated by interested people like you and come from our own gardens. Proceeds from the sale benefit The Nature Conservancy in Virginia. I will begin collecting plants the weekend before the sale and up to the sale. One of my friends, who often donates over 200 plants, moved from her large property and does not have plants to donate this year! So I’m hoping others will make up the difference! (hint, hint)

The dates this year will be:

Friday, May 1st from 4:00 pm – dark  and

Saturday, May 2nd from 9am – 1pm

The location is my backyard at 203 Howard Street in Ashland.

Since this will be a two day sale instead of the usual three day sale, I will be holding the preview for donors only from 3:00-4:00 on Friday. (I found that a three day sale was very exhausting for me!) At this time, donors may purchase up to the number of plants donated by that person. So the more plants you donate, the more purchasing power you have. I hope you will note this is not a swap but a sale to raise money for a good cause.
